This sweet chalkboard painted succulent planter is an adorable way to dress up your desk, kitchen window, or as a gift- to a sick friend, your childs favorite teacher, as a friendly welcome to a new neighbor, or to brighten grandma’s day. It is simple to make but looks like a pretty store bought arrangement. Succelents are ideal for this project because they like drier conditions and just about anyone can be succesful in growing them! I have made several of these to place around the house for a clean and fresh accent.
Here is what you will need:
- short, wide mouth mason jar
- chalkboard spray paint
- painters tape
- soil
- succulent plant
- raffia or sisal rope
- chalk
Lets put it together:
First, you will need to wipe down the entire outside of your jar with a cotton ball dipped in rubbing alcohol then allow it to dry completely- this removes oil and residue which lets your paint adhere better. I like to use these little squat mason jars as the roots of many succelents do not need deep soil for their roots. I think the scale is perfect for the shape and size of starter plants too.
Tape off the parts of your jar that you do NOT want painted with painters tape, you can cover the whole thing if you wish and just tape off the threads on the mouth of the jar- I like the clean look of a strip around the middle.
Spray one light even coat on exposed surface and allow to dry for 2-3 minutes. Add another 2-3 coats drying for a few minutes each time until you reach the final coat, let this one set for 4-5 hours.
Replace your jar ring to give it a finished off look. Fill your jar about ¾ full with soil then work your plants roots into the soil, cover with more up to ½” from the rim of jar.
Write on your sentiment and well wishes with chalk, then tie on a piece of sisal rope to finish it and slide in a piece of chalk for their use.
